One Million Daimoku

Dear SYDC,

As I have shared during practice, we are going to strive for one million daimoku from this October till our performance on 25th December! I will collate the number of daimoku (in blocks of 20 mins) on every Sunday. =)

Let's work towards this goal and put our prayers in unity!

Updates on SYDC Dance Training

Hey Crew,

Official Training will start Friday @ 7.30pm at SCC. Attendance is compulsory and should you not be able to attend, please inform Yingxin or Kherxin before every training. To prepare for the year end concert, we need 100% commitment.

Also, for those who are not able to make it for any sessions, everyone is responsible to learn whatever steps they have missed out on their own initiatives. All training are ongoing and accumulative, therefore do try to keep up.

P.S: We need everyone to have the right mindset to engage in this major performance so that we can pull off a good show. Remember, we are not doing these for our own self interests - but for your comrades, Soka Gakkai, and ultimately for sensei.

Keep the spirit high! =)

Now that the performances that we were preparing for are done, we will be resuming our Funk Styles sharing session!

Resuming from 18th July, Every Sunday, 4.30pm!

This time onwards, Freddie will be sharing the basics of Locking with us.

This session is open to ALL SYDC members!
This session is not compulsory
The sessions will emphasize on mostly techniques, rather than choreography.
So please be prepared as things may get dry/repetitive.
But foundations are essential to all dancers!
All good dancers will always work on their basics without fail, so let us train with the mindset that basics are very important!

For our performance for Streetwise Run, initially wanted a mix of juniors and seniors to learn and perform each other's routine. But after some considerations, largely due to time factor, we decided to keep it to how we did for the previous performance; so that we can tighten our routines and put up an even better show!

As we've shared during our last Daimokukai, as a platform to strengthen our Faith and Dance, we'd we having a NHR Exam + Dance Showcase!

Details as follow:

1) NHR Exam

Finish reading up the whole book of New Human Revolution Volume 1. For those who do not have the book, do purchase a copy of it or borrow from someone. We will share more about the exam format soon. In the meantime, read and be inspired!

2) Dance Showcase

For the juniors, you guys will be working in teams.

They came out with this session because they feel that other genres of dance are also important, as now a days many funk techniques are being fused with "hip hop" dance.

Changes in practice dates for February

Hey everyone, there will be some changes to how practice is going to be for February. As most of us are involved in many events such as Chingay, Flash mob for Chingay, TPDE production etc etc, plus there chinese new year holidays, so creating quite a bit of interference to our usual sessions.

So for this month, there will be a combined junior and senior session on 7th Feb, 1pm to 3.30pm. There will be a daimokukai on 21st Feb, 1pm to 3.00pm, followed by a combined session from 3pm to 5pm, and after that we will proceed to Eugena's place for our SYDC CNY Reunion dinner. =)

After that, normal practices will resume from 26th Feb onwards. So please take note of changes everyone! And at the same time, please chant for the good health for our brother Junwei whos still hospitalised now yo. =)

He y'all! Hope everyone's doing great and giving your best in your daily lives yo! Anyways, here are some updates for y'all!

On 7th Feb 2010 (Sunday), it will be our monthly daimokukai at SCC Studio, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. There will be strict guidances and sharing by Kherxin and her group which will definitely benefit everyone, and also there will be an update on our upcoming dance exam for both seniors and juniors =)

And of course, our usual practices on fridays and sundays will continue as per normal, and juniors are welcome to session on sundays at 3.30pm. The studio will be free for all until 6pm. =)

Sharing Guidances

Human Revolution

President Makiguchi said there are three types of people in the world: those you want to have around, those whose presence or absence doesn't make a difference and those whose presence causes problems. Please become people others appreciate having around. This is the correct way of life for believers in Nichiren Dashonin's Buddhism, which teaches that Buddhahood is eternally inherent in our lives.

Those who at first may be completely overwhelmed by their environment or constantly defeated by their weakness but who then undergo dramatic personal transformation as a result of solid Buddhist practice can be wonderful inspirations for others. The most intense suffering, unbearable agony and seemingly insurmountable deadlock are actually brilliant opportunities for doing our human revolution.

Prayer

There are many elements involved in a prayer being answered. but the important thing is to keep praying until it is. By continuing to pray, you can reflect on yourself with unflinching honesty and begin to move your life in a positive direction on the path of earnest, steady effort. Even if your prayer doesn't produce concrete results immediately, your continual prayer will at some times manifest itself in a form greater than you had ever hoped.

Actual Proof

When we speak of showing actual proof, it doesn't mean we have to try to put on a show of being any more knowledgeable or accomplished than we are. It is my hope that, in the manner that best suits your situation, you will prove the validity of this Buddhism by steadily improving in your daily life, your family, place of work and community and by polishing your character.

Here to say a very BIG THANK YOU to everyone's effort for the very 1st performance coming up for SYDC this year.

From those performing to those not performing but came all the way down to SCC to join us and helped us with the playing of music and comments etc. To those who can't make it and I know they are always chanting at home for the crew. Really appreciate each and everyone's effort. This is what makes a crew a family. =D

Wanna apologies to junior/all, if I sounded fierce or used the wrong tone/say wrong thing when teaching/talking. Im not a good "teacher"/choreographer/person with words and im still learning.

But yeah, you guys are improving and now is to learn to enjoy the dance. =D But still i must emphasis. "Do not anticipate." haha.. Thank you very the much..

To all, I confess that my effort is not 200% yet. Working on it and let's jia you together too!

Hey everyone! Here are some updates on the chinese new year light up performance. Please take note of the following dates and bring your costume on this sat for the preview cos we will have costume vetting as well. =)

- 16 Jan, 3.30pm at SSA HQ - Preview to organisers of event, call time 2pm, bring costume for vetting and rehearsal

- 22 Jan - Rehearsal with another group performing for the event, place and time to be confirmed

- 23 Jan - Actual Show, to meet at TBSC at 11am. Rehearsal will start at 1pm and will leave TBSC at 3.45pm

- 16 Jan, 3.30pm at SSA HQ - Preview to organisers of event

Hey y'all! Before i do my updates, i would like to thank everyone for making the 1st SYDC Camp a super duber successful one! It is because of everyone's effort, presence and your tribally fun side that made this camp such a blast! Loves all of you guys! =))

Things to prepare for SYDC Kenshu/Camp

Hey y'all... Here are some of things you might wanna prepare and bring for the camp. Here are some things that all of you may/must bring.

To bring list:
- Sufficient clothes to change into (we’d have about 3 sessions of dancing)
- Undergarments
- Socks
- Shoes/Sneakers - For Dancing =)
- Toiletries - All your Soap, Shampoo Toothbrush, Toothpaste etc
- Slippers
- Jacket (you wouldn’t wanna sleep in the cold)
- Your Costume! - For our tribal theme "party" at night!
- Presentation materials - Your dance genre presentation
- Study Materials - The gosho notes given on the last Monday's meeting
- Your Beads and Gongyo Book
- Own Medications (If you are sick or your daily supplements or Just in case purposes)

This is going to be the upcoming activities for our crew.

As you can see, after O School Recital - which a number of you are involve in, we’re goanna be working towards our FIRST SYD’Crew Kenshu and also our first major performance for 2010 – Chinese New Year Light Up!

SYD’Crew Kenshu
Date: 25th and 25th December 2009 (Friday and Saturday)
Time: 2:00pm to 2:00pm (24hrs together)
Venue: SCC
Theme: Tribal (Survivor)

Our FIRST SYD’Crew Kenshu’s goanna be a:
1) Training Camp
2) X'mas Get-Together
3) To round up the whole year and plan for the upcoming year ahead!
It's a 3-in-1-damn-happening-Kenshu!

As the theme is “Tribal”, everyone is required to prepare a set of tribal costume to dress up in the evening for our “campfire”.
Some ideas can be e.g.
- Rings around the neck
- Feathers to dress up as Red Indians
- Face paint
- If you’ve got really no idea, “Lepord preens” (or even any other animal prints) will make a good fashion statement as well. Ha!
- etc.
You get the mean yeah? Be really spontaneous and creative! I’m sure it’s goanna be a lot of fun! “Awards” will be given to the best dress/most creative group! Think “Survivor”.

Groupings
We’d all be divided into 4 groups.
Refer: Previous blog post that Melvin has posted.
Requirement: Every group is to appoint a member of the group as the leader. Every group is also to come up with at least 2 “War Cries” (Group Cheer)
Remarks: This will be your grouping for any “Survivor Activities” that we have throughout the camp. It will be your “Campfire Presentation” grouping as well!

Presentation
Topic: History of a genre/style of dance (Locking, Popping, Hip Hop & Jazz)
Grouping: Refer to previous blog post that Melvin has posted.
Timing: 15 mins (Every member has to be part of the presentation)
Presentation style: Open. Be creative.
Remarks: Prepare your presentation before the camp. We’ll have a progress meeting on 21st Dec.

X’mas Gift Exchange
Everyone is to prepare a X’mas gift of $10.
Remarks: Gift has to be unisex. No Mugs, Chocolate, Bookmarks, Keychains, Softoys, Photo frames.

Updates for Kenshu Grouping and Change in practice dates

Hey everyone! Just to do some updates and announcement! Long post ahead!

Announcing news for the our upcoming KENSHU,

FIRSTLY,
The first SYDC Kenshu will be an overnight camp from 25 Dec to 26 Dec. It will be a camp that will focus on faith, bonding and dance! And since its also Christmas, we will be celebrating Christmas too! And the theme will be TRIBAL CHRISTMAS!!! So you are to bring a tribal like costume, and everyone change into the costume during the night to celebrate christmas together and have a gift exchange! The max price per gift is $10, but NO MUGS, NO CHOCOLATES, NO BOOKMARKS! Be creative and buy a gift thats unisex! =)

SECONDLY,
Juniors will be broken up into 4 groups for some activities, and one of the activities which needs you to do now is to gather and research the history of a genre/style of dance. So heres the grouping and the genre/style of dance to research on:

Group 1: Funk (Locking)

It doesnt have to be in power point slides. Time to squeeze that creative juice of yours and make it fun and interactive! We are looking for creativity with correct facts =D Should you have any questions regarding about the presentation, feel free to look for Junwei or Me =)

As shared during last Sat Training, we need to always understand the objective/purpose of each performance so that we can bring meaning to our dance.

Breaking Barriers Carnival Performance

Date: 14th Nov 2009
Time: 10am to 930pm (SYDC Performance@ 6pm)
Venue: Ngee Ann City Plaza

We will be performing for the Society of Physically Disabled (SPD), in which SSA has been supporting since 1994.

Basically, SPD's mission is about working towards the integration of physical disabled people into our mainstream society. Through programmes that encompass rehabilitation, employment, training, education, consultation and assessment in assistive technology, day care, and social service support, they work in partnership with people with physical disabilities to maximise their potential and to help them to be self-reliant and independent.

This carnival is one of the donation drives organised in conjuction with the International Day of Person with Disabilities (3 Dec). The Carnival also aims to share information on & create awareness on the disabled community. For every $2 donation, you can look forward to getting yourself a balloon sculpture, playing the fishing game, getting a chance to win fabulous prizes as well as taking control of a powered wheelchair to complete an obstacle course.

Having said so much, pls take note on the following on 14 Nov 09:

What's up everyone? Hope you guys enjoyed the performance. Be it you are performing or you are watching. I'm sure everyone brought the spirit of the whole 42 of us to the STAGE yeah!!! It is never only the spirit of those who are performing. =D

Like what Jin wen or Mel or Kexin said, it's marks a new beginning for the whole SYDC. Yup, no doubt. This is only the 1st Step.
Keep on striving, be it in dance or your daily life. Keep the High Life Condition(HLC) in you each day and score 200% in life. Never forget to base on faith, practice & study.

It's really happy to see everyone grow and improved, especially the juniors. You Guys definitely inspired us, the senior. Your itaidoshin spirit is already scary, and will be even scarier. Senior watch you all dance also goosebumps .. Keep it up and nv stop improving and of cos, nv be complacent too. Inspire people, inspired yourself.

For those who are still studying and having exam
Strong faith enables you to display your wisdom appropriately, so that you can take advantage of change and move forward in the direction of victory and hope. You can definitely show actual proof and benefit in accordance with the Gosho passage "Those who believe in the Lotus Sutra[Gohonzon] will gather fortune from ten thousand miles afar"

Pls continue to chant for the wisdom, courage and good fortune. as you are studying or having exam, especially those having Olvl in few days time. You will definitely show actual proof. Dun believe? Chant and you will see. But of cos, Chant & Action. Study hard people. =D All the best and bring back Rainbow Colour, not for us, but for yourself. Jia you!

For those graduated, working and beyond
There is a saying that urges us, "Excel at something!" It is important to become trusted by others wherever you are and to shine with excellence. Sometimes people may dislike their job at first but grow to love it once they become serious about doing their best. "What one likes, one will do well," goes another saying. Growing to like your job will also enable you to develop your talent.

Let's really strive our best in doing our job well. Earning the trust of your bosses/colleagues definitely make you feel more enjoying in work. =D Nevertheless, continue to chant for HLC too, no matter how boring/tired the work may be, be a employee that everyone have good words of you, and they will wonder why people from Soka is so Amazing. And if they ask why, we can start Shakubuku. =D How great!

Post Mortem for Youth Ignite Concert

Before we start congratulating ourselves for a good job done - on behalf of SYDC, I would like to thank Orange Cove for dedicating their final song to us. That little thought truly goes a long long way.

Although that genuine spirit and love in sharing our arts in our respective domains may be different in expression, but we are in fact running along the same path of Kosen Rufu, trying to soak the hearts of all one thousand plus audience with the Soka spirit. :)

Oh well, at least GD felt it. Haha!

For the crew:

This is indeed just the beginning. I hope that you guys and girls will eventually feel it in your blood what this crew is all about and gradually position yourself in the same direction as what the crew is originally created for.

You have live, eat and breathe the very essence of your own crew. It is something mystically contagious, yet powerful beyond comprehension. I want all of you to revel in this positive feeling, not in a narcissistic manner, but as an encouragement to yourself - that the long road ahead is treacherous and demands a lot more hardwork from each individual. So... use it to keep yourself warm. :)

I would like to thank Vanessa for her expression of love on stage during hosting. Yes indeed, you are something close to our hearts too! (Although I know it's scripted, but well, that's also because you added the sentence in... heh!) Your participation on the same stage is no less important anyone of ours and I would like to give you credits for it - it was amazing too!

Also, I would like to thank one special group of people - the girlfriend/boyfriend 'unsung heroes'. Your quiet support to your respective partners might seemed obligatory, but your gracious understanding towards his/her cause for sacrificing time to put up this performance (which could have been spent on precious dating) - is greatly appreciated.

Efforts to do our own part (Breakthrough!) for Kosen-Rufu, we’re making use of our performance for the upcoming FIRST Mega Youth Concert as a platform to reach out to more youths! As such, each and every individual one of us is to invite at least one New Friend (of course, the more the merrier!) down to support you at this concert performance; also to create an opportunity for our friends to get to know our value creating organization better!

Don’t Doubt; have the Courage to do so, and breakthrough our negative mindset! Let this Youth Concert be a platform for own great growth!

Updates Of Future Practices

Hey guys, just for your information, from 1st October 2009 onwards, all practices will be held at SCC unless stated other wise. How to go there? Please check the map and description as shown below. =)

- Take bus 242 from Boonlay Bus Interchange

- Alight at the 5th stop (excludes the point u board the bus), u will see block 676B, that is point B in the map.

- Cross the road and walk straight and turn right in all the way to point C shown in map

- You will reach SCC in about 10mins =)

A note to all,

I understand that all of us are busy with our own commitments, but we are tight on time for practices. SO, it is advisable that you try not to miss any practice unless you really really have something important to attend to. If you have missed out any practice, it is your own responsibility to learn the routine from other crew mates. So there is no excuse of saying "I do not know the routine because i did not come last week".

Hope everyone gets a mutual understanding. Please check the right panel for the practice dates and time yea! Lets work hard, dance hard and CHANT hard together and make our first performance TOGETHER, a DOPE one! =)

There are times where we intentionally fight on grounds that are hostile and hazardous; and these are choices that we opt to take because we deliberately place ourselves in arduous environment to grow beyond our limits.

How could we ever grow if we only trend on safe grounds? But surely, such lofty ideals beget a certain degree of risk - the risk of falling.

But understand the importance of growth, being the driver of all motivation in challenges, for it will supersede this very risk of falling - subjected to the gruesome and toiling nature of competition.

- Groups will be randomly grouped in 5 or 6 on the day itself

- Given 20 to 30 mins to think of formations and parts of the music that has no routine, have to think of what to do or freestyle~

- No stress, and no competition, it just a form of training to squeeze out the creative juice of yours and see how different groups interpret the song differently!

For those who need directions on how to get there:
One way that I know of is to
- Take Bus 16 from Orchard Station
- Alight AFTER you see Great World City on your right
- Walk into Zouk Carpark

Another way that I know of is
- Flag for a cab
- Get up the cab
- Say, "Uncle ah, Zouk carpark prea-sh!"
- Get down the cab (after you pay for the fare)

On a New Journey of Life

Dearest SYD'Crew Sisters and Brothers:

This isn't any sharing nor any updates. It's just my personal post. =D
As I will embark into the new phase of my life in about 6hours time, let me talk abit. HAHAHA!!

Although I'll be only away for 1 week and will be back next weekend, it is still quite a major stage in my life. With the "Lost of my Handsome dyed Hair" (Hahaha!) and the "Missing of my Pink IC for 2 years", I will be stepping into a environment of new challenges and struggles. No doubt that I can't predict what will happen during this 2years but yeah, I know I can face all with courage and wisdom and of cos, not forgetting, I have so many wonderful crewmates to "fight" along with. =D

Going to tekong it's like the Daishonin being exile to the Sado Island (I shall not explain the long story here. Cos I'm not quite sure of it myself though. HAHA! Go read it up!). Okay, one week may seemed short for some, but in a week's time many things could happen. I'll continue chant daimoku in Tekong for each and everyone, to have good Health, Happiness, Courage and Wisdom to overcome anything that you may be facing.
And of cos, You, yourself must chant a Powerful-life fighting daimoku too. " In a dancer term, a DOPE[zai zai, not the F4 zai zai k!hahah] daimoku" =D

Enough said, I shall go "Lights OFF" now, else can't wake up!
Take care my fellows crewmates! I'll miss u all. Smile always.. =D

Guidance:
Youth should not seek an easy, comfortable path. No one developss in a pampered environment. Youth should instead actively seek out challenges and hardships, transforming them all into valuables assets as they strive to become individuals of outstanding character and ability.

That's how we improve ourself in life. =D Set concrete and achievable goals/dreams. All this sharing applies to setting your prayers too. =D

So now I shall throw a question for you all to think about: "What is/are your goal(s) in SYDC?" I shall rephrase: "What do you hope to achieve in SYDC?"

First up! We've organised an Orientation to orientate all new mates yo! HaHa!

Post Mortem Audition Thoughts

Yesterday, I watched ‘Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader’ and there was this contestant, who managed to answer all the necessary questions correctly to clinch $500,000 USD worth of money in his pockets.

The conundrum for him is on his decision to attempt the One Million Dollar question. The success of his feat is extremely rewarding: $1,000,000 USD prize money.

But the failure of his attempt?

A drop to $25,000 USD from $500,000 USD.

I googled and youtube the result because the show intentionally postpone that scene till next episode - much to my annoyance.

Later I found out that he has failed his attempt.

Surely, it would be natural for anyone to feel crushing when we fall a little short of achieving what we desire in life. As much as we toil ourselves towards our goals, there are times in life when we are just that little distance away.

But we must always remember that we came with nothing, just like the contestant came with no winnings. Hence, even if we fail to achieve what we want - paradoxically speaking, we cannot lose ‘something’ that we do not own in the first place.

We are merely back to status quo.

I was heartened when people tell me that they are already happy to be able to enjoy that day because it was very fun, be it whether he/she gets in or not. And also learning what dance is like and are determine to learn them somehow or rather.

That in a sense – you have already gained something – a new perspective that had never existed in the beginning because you have transformed your experience into action.

And that is your $25,000 USD prize money brought home – when you have came with none.

We should never allow ourselves to dwell in what we haven’t done well – but instead, look forward and regain our focus on putting our best in the next available opportunity given to us. Our spirit must be unyielding and carrying the belief that we have the capacity to evolve and better ourselves in all areas of life.

When we are given the next opportunity to prove ourselves, the million dollar question is: are we then ready to ride the opportunity given? Or will we be consumed by our innate darkness to believe that we are just not capable or assumed that we can attempt to succeed using the same formula (essentially, the ‘same us’) that didn’t allow us to succeed previously?

The Human Revolution theory doesn’t exist merely as a theory – for Faith without Action is akin to tinder without the flint.

Allow me to encourage those who didn’t manage to get in this time round – please continue to pursue dance and Kosen Rufu with every ounce of your energy. Please continue to excel in life.

Because ultimately, when we grow ourselves, we have inevitably become victorious in life. =)
